Lilly and May
14 August 1987 – 05 September 1987 Studio Theatre
Playbox Theatre Company,
New Writing Theatre
The bag lady has been portrayed in popular mythology as a nuggety, rebellious, independent - and sometimes even rich - woman whose special brand of madness has led her to prefer a free life on the streets, to Welfare or the restrictions of responsible social life. For Lilly and May the reality is far from this commonly held view of eccentricity.
This production was first performed in the incompletely renovated Malthouse Theatre on 18 June, 1987. The audience was Playbox staff, and the play was staged with minimal lighting, no set and basic costume. Effectively, this was the first Malthouse performance.
